Heavy Metal Music and Its History
Offered through the Rochester Scholars summer enrichment program for high school students, Bang Your Head! is a unique course designed and taught by Josef Hanson that traces the development of heavy metal music from the end of late-60s psychedelia to current times. Along the way, students analyze the different subgenres of metal, learn about the various musical elements that contribute to the classic metal sound, and discuss the heavy metal culture and the traditions of rebellion, protest, and censorship. The course also includes a field trip to a local recording studio or radio station and visits by local metal aficionados. Guitar instruction is also sprinkled into the curriculum, giving even beginning shredders a hands-on experience with the music of Black Sabbath.
